A blend of the words ‘costume’ and ‘play’, the term ‘cosplay’ refers to the art of creating costumes and role-playing characters derived from popular forms of media. Widely considered a performance art, and born in Japan, it was Ashinocon in 1978 that brought with it the first documented case of cosplay. However, the dedication of cosplayers and the sophistication of their costumes has advanced significantly over the years with many cosplayers now investing significant time and expense on elemets beyond just costumes. For example, makeup, cosplay contact lenses like those you see here, and even props. Meanwhile, for those who take the art seriously, there are different levels of cosplay known as: novice, journeyman, master, and professional. The first of which is generally just costume based while the latter levels involve various degrees of role-playing. On the professional side of cosplay, it has proven to be a lucrative pursuit for cosplayers including Japanese-born Enako who made over $1.5 million in 2022 alone.

Movie inspired cosplay contacts

Designed for cosplayers at all levels, our extensive range of cosplay contacts incorporates a plethora of live-action movie-inspired designs. For James Cameron fans, we have a pair of bestselling Avatar contacts which can be used to cosplay the eyes of Navi from Avatar (2009) and Avatar: Way Of The Water (2022). Meanwhile, other popular options include our Pinhead contact lenses which have been designed to replicate the eyes of Pinhead from the Hellraiser franchise (1987–present), and our silver mirror contacts which serve as a movie-accurate replica of the eyes of Riddick from The Chronicles of Riddick franchise (2000 – 2013).

Cosplay contacts for video game characters

Video games also serve as a popular source of inspiration in cosplay which has led to conventions like GamesCon and The Tokyo Games Show introducing dedicated sub-events for cosplayers. With this in mind, we’ve introduced an extensive range of cosplay contact lenses that can be used to replicate the eyes of popular video game derived characters. For example, our dolly eye blue contacts are the perfect fit for the eyes of Junko Enoshima who serves as the chief antagonist of Japanese video game Danganronpa (2010), and according to The Guinness World Records Gamer Edition (2018) is officially the world’s most cosplayed video game character. Meanwhile, other examples include our emerald green contacts which bare an uncanny resemblance to the eyes of Fable from Fortnite (2017).

Cosplay contacts are identical to regular vision correcting lenses, except they won’t correct your vision, and they feature a hand-printed design on the outer facing surface. Manufactured in a lab-like facility in the UK, and to some of the world’s highest standards, including GMP, CE, and FDA, our cosplay contacts don’t pose any additional level of risk provided they are worn and cared for responsibly and in line with our care instructions.

How old do you have to be to wear coloured contacts for cosplay?

The law doesn’t actually stipulate a minimum age upon which you are legally able to wear contacts, and there are certainly many examples of children, including 12 years olds wearing cosplay contacts. However, young children typically have much smaller eyes and because cosplay lenses are designed for adults, and are often sold as a one-size-fits-all product, we don’t recommend them for use by anyone under the age of 16.

How many hours can you wear cosplay contacts?

In general, advice surrounding the maximum wear time for cosplay contacts is the same as it is for regular vision correcting contacts, this usually ranges from 8-12 hours. However, your optometrist will be able to give you specific advice, and to promote healthy eyes, we don’t recommend exceeding 8-hours wear time unless advised otherwise by your optometrist.
