Aqua Cat Contact Lenses (Cheshire Cat)

Most often mentioned in the context of Tim Burton’s films, Cheshire Cat was actually first referenced in Francis Grose’s A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (1788) where it was listed as a term to describe someone who ‘shows his teeth and gums in laughing’. It was Lewis Carroll’s novel Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland (1865) and sequel Through the Looking-Glass (1871) that first popularised the mischievous grinning cat in character form. Inspired by Carroll’s work, there have been many subsequent representations of Cheshire Cat, including Burton’s which has become the go to for cosplayers, and also the basis for the design of our aqua cat contacts. Known to be based on the British Shorthair breed, when viewed in isolation, Cheshire Cat’s eyes actually bare a closer resemble to the aqua-blue eyes of real-life Tonkinese cats (a cross-bread Siamese and Burmese).

Meanwhile, another earlier, but equally notable appearance is Walt Disney’s animation Alice in Wonderland (1951). However, Cheshire Cat was portrayed with an alternative appearance consisting of purple and violet stripes and big yellow eyes instead of aqua (see our yellow cat eye contacts).
