Serving as the fourth film in the high-grossing franchise, The First Purge is a prequel that skips back to the birth of the annual event. Having grown to become the most popular political movement in the United States, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA), led by President Bracken, introduce ‘The Purge’ amid rising crime rates, unemployment, and social instability. Confined to Staten Island and billed as a social experiment aimed at pulling crimes rates down below 1% for the remainder of the year, the Purge takes place over a 12-hour period between March 21-22 and effectively legalises all crimes including murder.

Taking the NFFA up on their offer of a $5,000 payment to ensure his participation in the experiment, Charms is subsequently instructed to wear a pair of hi-tech camera-equipped contact lenses that live stream footage direct to government scientists. Whilst in use these contact lenses glow blue which also appears to be the unofficial colour of support for Purge. For example, blue is also the colour of the Baptisia australis flowers which residents are seen to place outside their houses as a sign of support. Meanwhile, many of those who take part in the Purge wear items of blue clothing such as hoodies or bandannas.

The First Purge doesn’t represent the only possible use case for our bright blue UV contacts though.
